Special Report!

On Tuesday, May 15, 2003 the voters of Fairfield approved the bonding referendum that was set up to raise $1,400,000 from local option taxes currently being collected towards the jail complex.  The 62% margin gives approval to use 70% of the collections for the Civic Center and 30% for general enhancement projects for Fairfield.  By passing this measure, the CAT grant of $800,000 will be enabled.

The project now needs to raise $1,500,000 by August 15th to complete the financial obligations so that construction plans can begin.

One of the dreams of many Fairfield residents is to establish a Civic Center for the use of the general public and any organization that would benefit from having a quality facility available for gatherings.

The organizing group promoting the new Civic Center is working hard to obtain site and financing options.  When those details become public, we will post them here.

The site of the Civic Center will be the one block area west of the Courthouse in downtown Fairfield.

On Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002 Mayor Ed Malloy and others interested in promoting the Jefferson County Civic Center met with Vision Iowa/CAT in Des Moines to discuss the project.  The VI/CAT Board voted to enter negotiations with the JCCC for funding levels.  This is an important step in obtaining funding for the project.
Update:
Several members of the JCCC group are meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 8th in Des Moines to discuss funding with the CAT Board.
Update:  January 15, 2003
The CAT Board offered $800,000 towards the Civic Center project.  

At the Fairfield City Council meeting on Monday, Jan. 13, 2003 the issue of a bond referendum was discussed and placed on the ballot for May 13th, in the amount of $1,400,000 for the share of City of Fairfield money towards land acquisition costs and donation in general support of the project.

Private donations are, of course, welcome!

On Wednesday, November 12, 2003 several members of the Fairfield community who have pledged donations for themselves or their organizations to the Civic Center gathered at the proposed site to encourage more donations.

 
Mayor Ed Malloy spoke at the December 15th 2003 City Council meeting about the need to continue efforts to fund the Jefferson County Civic Center.  The Mayor made a proclamation to that effect and presented it to board members at that council meeting.
